This update is meant to explain, with the greatest transparency and detail, why we are behind on the production of CHAPTERS. It was not an easy decision to make, but one that was necessary.
The Current Situation
We have put everything in motion this past year to reach our galloping timeframe. That is the reality with crowdfunded projects. We have a timeframe in mind and are trying everything to respect it, but we have to face reality: CHAPTERS is a very ambitious endeavor and something that has not been attempted before. For both backers and creators, believing in a project and kick-starting it is gambling on the future. This is our third game and we know things never go as planned, but nothing could’ve prepared us for our current challenge. Vampire: The Masquerade—CHAPTERS is a fundamental project for our entire team, both on a personal and professional level. The astounding quantity of components, the incredible amount of artwork, backer involvement in continually improving gameplay, the complexity of branching scenarios, recruitment, licensing approbation, manufacturing and working with artists all over the world all while a global pandemic is raging on has required a lot of time and investment to establish sound working processes. Up to now we were on target and we confident, but we are henceforth facing a wall.
The Situation
The production window that we had reserved with our manufacturer begins imminently. And we are not ready. We have thus decided to push the game back six months. This shift in production schedule would bring us to February 2022 (right before Chinese New Year). These six additional months will allow us to bring the game to where we want it to be, to elevate the game to the height it deserves and beyond. Many reasons have led to this delay, but none are an excuse. We take full responsibility for what happened.
Do Not Mistake Speed With Haste
CHAPTERS is the most important project FLYOS has ever undertaken to this day. By its very nature of being a board game/roleplaying game hybrid with true freedom of approach/choices/consequences, CHAPTERS is a unique game that we are both discovering and building at the same time. Our expectations for it are thus understandably high. And yet we had hoped to be able to ship the game this summer.
No Compromises.
We have invested more than 1 million dollars in creating this game, by picking and hiring some of the best in the industry: game designers, illustrators, sculptors, scriptwriters, narrative consultants, composers, etc. We do not want to sabotage the finishing touches on this big a project. We keep saying it and we will say it again, to us: “Quality always wins over quantity.” CHAPTERS is the first game in a long saga that FLYOS is putting in place. These investments, both financial and temporal, have only one goal: to bring you the best experience possible.
No Second Chance to Make a Good First Impression
We know this decision will frustrate some of you. Nobody likes to get their games late and we fully understand the enthusiasm that this project arouses (we are, after all, board and roleplaying games players). This frustration is legitimate and we understand. However, we are convinced that this extra workload and finish will only make your experience with CHAPTERS that much better. You will benefit from even more polished writing, more detailed visuals, faithful translations, a greater immersion and thus, a better game.
What Will We Do During Those Six Months?
To begin, the FLYOS team is now complete (with 6 full-time employees and over 5 freelancers). We will thus go over and tweak each detail and beyond until we are satisfied with the result. Those on the team whose work on the game hasn’t already been completed will be entirely dedicated to CHAPTERS. These additional months will make all the difference.
What Happens if I Move Before Then?
You can always edit your address in CrowdOx at any moment by using the link in your confirmation/invitation email.
New Release Date
We will complete production before the Chinese New Year (Feb. 1st) so that shipping begins at the latest in March 2022.
Roadmap
To maintain transparency, we will share with you our roadmap from now on. Each month you will see an approximation of where we are in the game’s development. Again, the graphic is an approximation, but it will help you see how things fare.
Another FLYOS Project Until Then?
Yes! Our collaboration with Paradox Interactive continues, and we will announce our next game within a week. However, we want to reassure you, we will not launch any other Kickstarter campaign before you have received your copy of CHAPTERS! The team in charge of the next game has already finished their part on CHAPTERS.
