Todo sigue avanzando de acuerdo al plan.
Tan pronto soy oteado por alguno de los vigías españoles, agito el pañuelo blanco y muestro mis manos libres de armas. Tras arrastrar un poco más a Williams justo al borde del campamento, lo acomodo contra un árbol y me aseguro que esté cómodo. Al mismo tiempo, prevengo ser observado por mis otros compañeros del bando enemigo, manteniéndome a cubierto por las copas que impedirían una visión desde las alturas.

Digo en perfecto castellano, con el típico acento de Valencia, para luego entregar el santo y seña.

Desde el campamento español se asomaron varios vigías que vieron a Amant con el pañuelo que hacía de bandera blanca y lo dejaron entrar tras además oírlo hablar en perfecto castellano.
-¡Hombre, Polidor, nos dijeron que llegarías! ¡Bienvenido y enhorabuena por estar de una pieza!, ¡tóma, unas provisiones!. Le dieron un trozo de pan reciente junto a algo de chorizo, que tenía muy buena pinta-- Así que ahora te haces pasar por éste desgraciado, Jack Williams, sí, teníamos constancia de que te infiltrarías por algún cabo enemigo, está bien saber el nombre, para que se sepa entre los campamentos españoles quién eres y así nadie te dé el alto. Toma este salvoconducto, te ayudará para llegar a Washington, le entregó una carta manuscrita con sello de lacre y la firma de los Altos Mandos de La República-- Intenta ahora que tendrás la confianza del mayor americano, que te presente al Capitán, puede que éste te presente a su vez a tu contacto, quien te acompañará hasta Washington, al ser agente doble y encargarse de los asuntos de la Embajada Americana, no diremos aquí su nombre ahora, por si hay voces que nos puedan escuchar, ya me entiendes, pero ya sabes tú quien es de todas formas. Dicho esto, que el Señor te guarde hijo.
Tras escuchar la petición de Polidor de que los acompañasen al claro, para disimular, se dispusieron a salir dos soldados junto a Amant, pero antes de salir por la puerta el Teniente español que estaba a cargo del campamento se dirigió una última vez a Amant.
-¡Ah, Polidor, una última cosa! Ha conseguido llegar usted hasta aquí, más lejos que ningún otro antes, tenía al principio mis recelos, era un simple un recluta hace poco ni más ni menos, pero ya es usted cabo y se lo ha ganado con creces, veo que mis recelos eran infundados y que el General y el Almirante hicieron bien en confiar en usted. Ahora bien, ¡debe de llegar a Washington a como de lugar! y... ¡Tenga cuidado, a partir de aquí será incluso más cuidadoso, no sabemos quién puede estar escuchando tras las paredes!.
Justo en ese momento se escuchó como un ruido de guijarros muy lejano, como si alguien los estuviera observando pero... salvo ellos dos y los 2 soldados rasos que acompañarían a Amant fuera de las puertas del campamento, no se veía a absolutamente nadie, y sin embargo... ése ruido...
Tras esto, los soldados salieron junto a Amant del campamento. Amant les habló de la entrega del desertor, a lo que los soldados le respondieron:
-Of course, we will take care of this deserting pigeon properly, he will be forced to go with those who embark for the Philippines, I don't think he will have a good time, this little Polisher Count," he said this in a very loud voice to make sure that the echo would carry the words to the ears of the American soldiers in the nearby camp. Goodbye.
Todos vieron el noble gesto de Amant al limpiarle la sangre al desertor, algunos soldados en ambos bandos aplaudieron la acción.

En el campamento americano acogieron relativamente bien a Amant (Williams) a su vuelta. El Mayor fue a hablar directamente con él, tras ser recibido por Rojas y Madrigal, con quienes había estado conversando

La fiesta había empezado con gran algarabía y jolglorio por parte de los invitados, la gran mayoría altos cargos del ejército Americano. En un rincón, junto al ponche, había una zona con unos platos llenos de entremeses variados propios de la época.

They call it bellavista hake, and that's the famous shrimp cocktail over there, it's finger-licking good. They have that stuff they make with the pork, the...serrano ham they call it, and the delicious Spanish potato omelette, have you tried it yet?....

Recibo el vaso con ponche y lo beso suavemente evitando beber más que un poco, al tiempo que busco mostrar lo sabroso que está y lo mucho que me agrada la recepción.
¿Por qué esta situación de tener comida española en el campamento estadounidense? ¿Es un segundo plano de intoxicación, emulando a los espías en el barco, pero como retribución?
Asiento tras el ofrecimiento de los platos, al tiempo que hago reposar el vaso en una mesita justo cuando nos llevan al ruedo para un baile. Escucho atentamente el ritmo y la melodía para recordar la coreografía adecuada.
Sería terrible si me descubren por hacer algún paso bochornoso o errado. Aunque lo más probable es que conozca lo fundamental o pueda imitar por observación acuciosa.
